Litrouke created this interactive game, Please Answer Carefully, in a survey format to explore difficult subjects like stalking and the pressure to choose the correct choice. It takes about 5-10 minutes to complete, telling a story through answering questions. Litrouke wrote this as a horror game with eerie vibes, trying to manipulate the users to choose the “correct” answer. The coding is very simple, having users just click checkboxes. However, some of the checkboxes are controlled by the game, contributing to the anxiety of the horror experience.
The survey is made in Twine, which is a storytelling tool that authors can use to compose interactive games that allow the readers to make choices that affect the narrative. Through Twine, the author heightens the stress of clicking the right choice for the questions being asked of you, especially with the spooky breathing sound effects. Litrouke uses these effects to influence the readers with heightening anxiety, even within an interactive game. It’s different from the other Twine games because of the simplicity of the survey format. It just looks like a window browser or tab that is popped open, and it makes the users feel like you’re answering a survey that you are forced to fill out in a doctor's office. Those abrupt sound effects make it more chilling with the easy questions before it turns to something more dark.
I believe that this survey game has a deeper meaning of thinking that you are in control in picking the “correct” choice. However, some fear or anxiety tricks your brain into choosing whatever answer your mind first comes up with. In this survey game, all answers are somewhat controlled from the stalker that craves to talk to the reader– the outcome inevitable.
