Individual Work: @MayorEmanuel
Journalism professor Dan Sinker’s Twitter project @MayorEmanuel is an example of character-focused netprov satire based on a real-life person. Sinker pretends to be former Indiana Representative and Chief of Staff to Barack Obama, Rahm Emanuel, during his 2010-2011 campaign for Mayor of Chicago through a series of Tweets that combines literary, “bookish” language with Emanuel’s familiar penchant for vulgarity. The result is a comic rendering of Emanuel as a swaggering, sharp-elbowed Chicago politician with an erudite grandeur. At turns satirical and surreal, the stream which were initially published under the veil of anonymity, expanded to encompass 1,955 Tweets and amassed over 50,000 followers and was published as a print book by Scribners in 2011.
