A Study in Shades, by Robert Kendall is a two part poem about dealing with Alzheimer’s disease. It is depicted on a split screen, with each side being the point of view of a different person. One side is a poem from the perspective of an elderly man suffering from Alzheimer’s and the other side is from the perspective of his adult daughter.
Each poem is made up of four pages, each address a particular aspect of life with Alzheimer’s. At the top of each side are arrows used to click to the next screen of the poem. The poems side by side in this way depict the relationship between the two and the disease which has split that relationship apart. The layout effectively demonstrates how each are dealing with the disease separately, and yet, also dealing with the disease together.
